Pedro Oliva, who passed away on June 22, 2026, at the age of 56, is being remembered by family and friends as a man whose life was filled with determination, humor, compassion, and unforgettable moments. Though he faced many challenges throughout his journey, Pedro’s personality, resilience, and love for those around him left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.
As the son of a future Hall of Famer, Pedro appeared to have a promising path in baseball ahead of him. He showed remarkable talent at a young age, including during his time with the Elizabethton Twins, where at just 18 years old he hit seven home runs in only 150 at-bats. His accomplishments often drew comparisons to his father’s early minor league achievements, something Pedro embraced with pride and humor.
A knee injury eventually cut his baseball career short, but those who knew Pedro understood that his identity was never limited to sports. Throughout adulthood, he faced significant physical and mental health struggles, leading to many difficult periods and hospital visits. Despite these hardships, Pedro maintained his sense of humor and often joked that he had “more lives than a cat.” Behind the humor was a person with incredible strength and perseverance.
Pedro had a deep love for animals, especially dogs. His affection for animals became part of the stories that made him uniquely Pedro. Over the years, he cared for many creatures and created memorable adventures, including having a pet ferret and even attempting to raise an alligator in a bathtub. His choices were sometimes unusual, but they reflected his curiosity and big personality.
Life brought Pedro many obstacles, including struggles with addiction and untreated mental illness. Yet through everything, he remained thankful for the people who supported and loved him. His family was a central part of his life, and his home was filled with photographs of loved ones — a daily reminder of the connections he valued most.
Pedro is survived by his parents, Tony and Gordette Oliva; brothers Damion (Daborra) Oliva and Ric (Cheryl) Oliva; sister Anita Oliva; nephews Yoel (Ada) Oliva, Alex Oliva, and Nic Oliva; niece Maddi Oliva; best friend Karol Gross; and many extended family members and friends.
He will be remembered for his laughter, courage, love of animals, and devotion to family and faith. Pedro faced life’s challenges in his own way and never stopped appreciating the people who stood beside him.
A visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on July 2, 2026, at Washburn-McReavy Bloomington Chapel. A funeral service will be held from 11:00 a.m. to noon on July 3, 2026, at Park Avenue United Methodist Church, with visitation one hour prior.
Pedro’s memory will continue through the stories, laughter, and love he leaves behind. He will be deeply missed by all who were fortunate enough to know him.
